My group designed a poster to represent and explain the rise of democracy in the United States during the 1800s. We answered the essential question through the analysis of a county election painting, an article about the painting, data from two voting charts, voting quotes, and a primary source about the Dorr War. From analyzing these documents and learning about democracy during this time period, we were able to define the term democracy as "a government controlled by the whole population through elected representatives." My group was able to conclude that during the 19th century, democracy was somewhat prominent. However, it was not completely developed. Women and African Americans had not yet gained the right to vote. However, certain aspects of this system of government remain the same as they are today. For example, even in the 1800s, citizens were able to vote for officials through elected representatives. P.S. Sorry about the distant view of the photo....it was the best one I had.
